Consequently, this stage requires meticulous record-keeping and attention to detail. After inventorying, we file an official Inventory and Appraisal with the court (Forms DE-160/161). This document provides a comprehensive overview of the estate’s financial standing.
Notwithstanding the complexity, accurately marshaling assets is essential for several reasons. First, it ensures fairness in distributing the estate to rightful heirs. Second, it allows creditors to file valid claims against the estate. Third, it helps prevent any potential disputes or legal complications down the line.
Moreover, a thorough inventory can help identify hidden assets that the deceased may have overlooked. I recall one case where we uncovered a long-forgotten savings account containing a substantial sum. The family was overjoyed to discover this unexpected inheritance. These moments are truly rewarding and remind me of why I chose this profession.

Occasionally, locating all assets can be tricky. Some individuals may not maintain detailed financial records, making it difficult to track down every account or investment. In such cases, I work closely with the family to gather any available information and contact institutions directly.

We eventually discovered that he had rolled over his funds into a self-directed IRA managed by a smaller brokerage firm. It took some persistence, but we were able to access the account and ensure it was properly included in the probate inventory.
